WHAT PROBLEMS ARE CAUSED BY SETTING THE AIR CONDITIONER TOO LOW, AT 16-20°C?

What problems are caused by setting the air conditioner too low, at 16-20°C?

In tropical countries such as Vietnam, many households use air conditioning constantly to stay cool. In summer especially, units run at almost full capacity at relatively low temperature settings. Scientists warn that setting the air conditioner below 25°C can cause a range of problems for health, the environment and the unit’s performance.

Health effects

  • Thermal shock: A very low air conditioner setting creates a large gap with the actual outdoor temperature. Spending long periods in an air-conditioned room can lead to thermal shock when you step outside. Thermal shock occurs when the body cannot adapt to a sudden change in temperature, causing symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, headaches, nausea, fatigue, muscle cramps and low blood pressure.
  • Rhinitis and sore throat: Air blowing directly at the nose and throat can irritate the mucous membranes and weaken the body’s immunity. This makes you more susceptible to infections and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, such as rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
  • Pneumonia: If the air conditioner is not cleaned regularly, dust and bacteria can build up inside. When the unit runs, these are released into the air and can harm the health of occupants.
  • Dry skin and eyes: Air conditioners work by removing moisture from the air, leaving the environment quite dry. At very low temperatures, the air conditioner can dry out the skin and eyes, causing discomfort and irritation.

Effects on unit performance and the environment

  • Energy consumption: The air conditioner has to work harder to maintain a low temperature, which increases energy consumption and wastes money.
  • Service life: Running continuously at low temperatures can shorten the life of the air conditioner. Internal components wear out faster, meaning repairs or replacement are needed sooner.
  • Environmental impact: Running an air conditioner at very low temperatures uses a lot of energy and increases carbon dioxide emissions, which harms the environment.
