Variable frequency drives (or inverters) can introduce harmonics into an electrical system. A drive is an electronic device that controls the speed and current of an electric motor by converting the input voltage and frequency. This conversion can generate harmonics or electromagnetic interference that affect power quality and the operation of other equipment in the system.
Harmonics from a drive arise from the voltage and frequency conversion process. There are two main types of harmonics a drive can produce:
- Integer harmonics (Harmonic Distortion): These are produced when the drive converts voltage and current imperfectly, so that additional frequency components appear in the output voltage and current. These harmonics can affect other equipment in the system and cause electromagnetic interference.
- Interharmonics: These are frequency components that are not integer multiples of the input frequency, often appearing close to the fundamental frequency. They can appear in the drive’s output voltage and current and cause interference and power quality problems.

How harmonics harm cooling systems
- Harmonics from the power supply: If the supply feeding the cooling system contains harmonics, such as multiples of the supply frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz), they can cause problems throughout the system. Equipment such as compressors and fans may run erratically as a result.
- Electromagnetic interference: Harmonics can create electromagnetic interference in the cooling system, degrading the performance of its electronic components. This can lead to poor temperature control or reduced cooling capacity.
- Poor power factor: If the cooling system generates or draws a lot of out-of-phase power or already has a poor power factor, harmonics can make the power factor worse and push up the system’s operating costs.
To reduce the impact of drive harmonics, measures include fitting harmonic filters, improving the drive design and complying with power quality standards. These measures cut harmonics and protect other equipment in the system from their harmful effects.
