There are several reasons why running an air conditioner for the same amount of time uses more electricity on a hot day than on a milder one. Here are the main reasons:
- Outdoor temperature: On a hot day, the outdoor temperature is higher, creating a bigger temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. The air conditioner has to work harder to cool the indoor space to the desired temperature, which requires more energy and increases power consumption.
- Insulation: On a hot day, a home’s insulation is also usually less effective. Heat from outside can easily enter the indoor space and raise the room temperature quickly. This puts heavy pressure on the air conditioning system to keep the indoor space cool, leading to higher energy consumption.
- Humidity: Hot weather often comes with higher humidity, which makes the heat feel even more uncomfortable. The air conditioner has to work to reduce humidity and create a cooler, more comfortable space. This dehumidification process takes extra energy and increases power consumption.
- Continuous use: On a hot day, people tend to run the air conditioner continuously to stay comfortable. The system therefore operates for longer, with no rest between cooling cycles, which also leads to higher energy consumption.
In short, on hot days the air conditioner has to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature while overcoming challenges such as higher temperatures, poor insulation, high humidity and continuous use. Together, these factors make it consume more electricity than in milder weather.
