WHY TOILETS NEED VENTILATION
- Removes unpleasant odours from the toilet
- Keeps the bathroom mirror free of condensation
- Brings oxygen into the room for a fresh, airy space

The toilet (WC) is an essential part of every home. However, humidity in the bathroom is always high, creating ideal conditions for mould and bacteria to grow. Walls, hand towels, toothbrushes and the surfaces of sanitary fixtures can all harbour bacteria, and toilet odours are always unpleasant for users. That is why a ventilation system for the WC is a must for every household. Let’s explore WC ventilation systems with TechConnect Vietnam
NATURAL VENTILATION

Natural ventilation depends entirely on the architect’s design: the layout must allow air to circulate through the WC on its own and carry all odours outside without any mechanical assistance. The design requires:
- An adequate ratio of openings to floor area
- Doors fitted with louvers
- A WC location that allows air to circulate naturally
- Complete reliance on the layout, leaving little control over how well odours are removed
To take control of WC ventilation, designers turn to mechanical (forced) ventilation: adding a ventilation system that changes the rate of air exchange in the room and can be actively controlled, regardless of the architectural design. Let’s look at the options
MECHANICAL VENTILATION WITH WALL-MOUNTED FANS

One of the simplest and most common methods is mechanical ventilation with a wall-mounted fan. The fan extracts air from the room, creating negative pressure with an air change rate of 10-15 times per hour, so all WC odours are expelled outside. However, this method has its limitations
- The WC must be next to an external wall so the fan can exhaust outside
- It looks unattractive
- It is only suitable for ordinary homes without high aesthetic requirements
For a more aesthetic solution, let’s look at the next ventilation system
MECHANICAL VENTILATION WITH CEILING-MOUNTED FANS

Type 1: Local ceiling-mounted ventilation
There are two common ways of using ceiling-mounted fans for ventilation
- Type 1: Local ceiling-mounted ventilation, as shown in the image
- Type 2: Central ceiling-mounted ventilation, in which ceiling exhaust fans discharge into vertical shafts that carry the air up to the roof
Type 2: Central ceiling-mounted ventilation
